Our History with the Paralympic Games

Did you know? ISCoS Founder Sir Professor Ludwig Guttmann conceptualised the very first paralympic games on 29 July 1948, alongside the London Olympic Games.
Guttmann single-handedly revolutionised the rehabilitation of patients with spinal cord injuries, who were only believed to have a two-year life expectancy post-injury.
His passionate instance of movement, craft and sport allowed Guttmann’s patients to not only outlive their projection, but instead thrive despite their disability.
“He changed my world out of all recognition because he gave me so much more confidence, I knew I was an equal to anybody.” – Caz Walton, 10 time Paralympic Gold Medalist
Conceived as ‘The Stoke Mandeville Games’, Guttmann’s legacy was brought to the world-stage in 1960 as Italy introduced the first official Paralympic Games in Rome. Uniting 400 athletes from 23 countries, this event became the centre point for disabled individuals from all walks of life.
